Mountaineer

Since a Raleigh International expedition to Chile in 1994 I have taken part in many expeditions and adventures around the world. Through expeditions I can fulfill my childhood dream of exploring our fragile planet and its many wonders. I have travelled to many parts of the globe including South East Asia, North and South America, the Arctic and Europe, and worked with many different peoples on such projects as health surveys, improving fresh water supplies and teaching local schoolchildren.

In 1999 I suffered severe frostbite whilst climbing on Mt. McKinley in Alaska, and after three years recovering from my injuries I returned to high altitude and climbed Island Peak in Nepal.

I have now completed a British first - to climb the highest peaks on the worlds seven largest islands. I completed this quest by climbing the Penny Ice Cap (Baffin Island) in 2003, Gunnbjørns Fjeld (Greenland) in 2004, Mt. Kinabalu (Borneo) in 2005, Gunung Kerinci (Sumatra) and Carstensz Pyramid (Iran Jaya) in 2006, and finished with Maromokotro (Madagascar) in October 2007!

I am a Derbyshire lad and still live in my Hometown of Belper, Derbyshire, England.

Why Do I Climb?

Over the years many climbers have been asked this question, but is there a clear answer? I don't think so. All I can say is that I climb for many reasons...

Mountain scenery is magnificent. It is barely touched by man and still remains a wilderness.

I find the peace and quiet so wonderful in these days of noise, mobile communications, pollution and stress.

I find a great deal of solitude in the mountains. I can clear my mind of the rigors of daily life, and replace them with thought and reflection.

The physical effort needed to climb provides a daily challenge to keep going.

Finally there is a special magic that words cannot explain. You have to experience it to appreciate it.

The World at Large...

I Travel the globe with my adventures and that comes at a price.  A price to me, but more importantly, a price to the Environment.  That is why I now offset all my international travel through Climate Care.  We only have one world and one life and we must preserve them both.

I am passionate about the environment and its preservation and take my responsibilities seriously.  Climate change is something very real and we should stop shying away from the possibilities and start looking at reality..!
